Manila is the capital and main commercial centre of the archipelago of islands that form the Philippines. It has a colourful history with a wide variety of cultural influences. To escape the heat of the city, travel about an hour to Tagaytay, a popular picnic spot that benefits from cool breezes and spectacular mountain views or explore the extraordinary Taal Lake, which lies in the crater of a volcano. South of Manila lie the beautiful ‘bounty’ beaches of Cebu and Borocay - a reasonably short flight from the city.
