Things to do in Frankfurt
Hotel Hessicher Hof is situated just opposite the main entrance of the Messe Frankfurt fairground and a 10 minute walk from the main train station and the city centre, where you will find shopping facilities as well as sightseeing attractions. Frankfurt has many saving graces, with some excellent museums, odd nooks of almost rustic snugness, and far more cosmopolitan verve than most other German cities. Most of Frankfurt’s best museums line up impressively along the south bank of the Main, roughly opposite the Alstadt, the inner core of Frankfurt centred around An der Hauptwache, a square on the right side of the Main River and Frankfurt’s hub.
On Saturday mornings a fleamarket adds to the attraction, with scores of stallholders and their antique ware, Indian prints, Peruvian knits and dusty nik-naks and in true German tradition, beer flows freely with Glühwein in winter as well as coffee, cakes and a massive outdoor grill.
Frankfurt’s main shopping street is Zeil, to the north of the Alstadt, stretching between An der Hauptwache and Konstablerwache. Once the prettiest street in town, the Zeil is now where you will find all the major chain and department stores and headlong consumerism. West of An der Hauptwache you enter a different world entirely. Here, along Goethestraße, are the city’s most upmarket stores, starting at the eastern end of the street with the likes of Laura Ashley and working upwards through Louis Vuitton to the giddy heights of Cartier and Tiffany. Roughly parallel to Goethestraße is Große Brockenheimer Straße, a street of delectable, stylish and outrageously expensive foodstores and delicatessens known to locals as the Fressengasse, “guzzle alley”.
