Hotel Brunelleschi immortalised in print

Dan Brown’s novel Inferno, the latest sequel to the extremely popular Da Vinci Code, features the Hotel Brunelleschi as protagonist Professor Langdon’s base while staying in Florence. As he says to Sophie in the book: “We’d be living in luxury. They’re giving me a room at the Brunelleschi.” The hotel has devised an Inferno Package as well as an Inferno Guided Tour, which takes guests through the major Florentine landmarks in the book. These include the Boboli Gardens and Mannerist Buontalenti Grotto, the Vasari Corridor, Baptistery of St John and the Palazzo Vecchio. This makes an exciting incentives trip or team building exercise.

Hotel Palacio’s wartime history

During World War II, Estoril in Portugal, was home to a number of exiled monarchs and other dignitaries, and the region became a hotbed of spies. The Hotel Palacio became a favourite meeting place for some of the world’s most famous secret agents, including Dusko Popov, Kim Philby, Philip Jones and the author Graham Green. It also provided James Bond creator Ian Fleming with plenty of inspiration when he stayed there in 1941. The bar at the Hotel Palacio was where both allied and German agents would plot various manoeuvres – and traditionally they would order a bottle of expensive champagne if their mission was successful. This became known as the “champagne news service” – because if you knew who had ordered the champagne, you would know which side had won.
