An unforgettable beach stroll

by Marilyn Levi

This story is part of our 'Unforgettable hotel nights' series, featuring tales from luxury hotel guests which were sent in for our recent travel writing competition.

I wondered whether this New Year’s Eve in Zanzibar would come up to expectations. Breeze’s Beach is in an idyllic setting, just set back from a beautiful sandy beach, which stretches into the distance, backed by a row of coconut palms.

Our room was in a typical Zanzibar style with a high-pitched roof allowing the breeze from the open French windows to create a cooling breeze. The canopy double bed was protected by a sturdy mosquito net, of which more to reveal later.

Wandering along the beach, we met our room boy, who delighted us by collecting a little pile of shells and flowers, which he then placed as decoration in our room. This was a taste of the service to follow on this special holiday.

Early evening, we explored the bar, which was beautifully decorated in ethnic colours. We lounged on cushions and glanced at our fellow guests. Such wonderful views inspired us to try several exotic sounding cocktails and we were all set for the night ahead.

We were led into a beautiful dining room in the main hotel, where there was a seating plan. We were most impressed to be seated next to the Swiss ambassador to Tanzania on the high table! This charming couple.
