Set above the Bay of Naples, the Grand Hotel President Sorrento boasts some of the finest views I’ve ever seen. Walking into the sumptuous lobby with its high ceilings, marble floor and massive chandelier, we were greeted by efficient and friendly staff. This hotel has a luxurious feel, and an interesting mix of modern and classic design.

The pièce de résistance has to be the terrace bar with its sweeping views of the bay. It took our breath away – and really needs to be seen to be believed. We ordered a couple of glasses of crisp prosecco and toasted our holiday as the sun set. Bliss!

Our superior double room was lovely – spacious and clean, with a small table and chairs on our balcony where we could soak up the glorious surroundings. The buffet breakfast was loaded with fresh fruit, pastries, yogurts, local cheeses and hams, with eggs cooked to order.

The rooms evoke the Mediterranean with vibrant sea colours and range from twin or doubles to senior suites, complete with living area and jacuzzi. Making the most of the spectacular panorama, many of the beautifully decorated guest rooms have a sea-view patio or balcony.

The free shuttle service to Sorrento was a blessing – we used it pretty much every day, and saved on taxi fares, although it can be walked in about half an hour. There is free parking if you hire a car. The hotel is blessed with a lovely pool, which also benefits from the beautiful views. The restaurant serves a good selection of local dishes, as well as some classic favourites from around the world.

It’s hard to avoid romance in this beautiful setting. The timeless views over the Bay of Naples, the pretty gardens dotted with double loungers, the patio bar and pool – all promote the beauty of the landscape.

We dined in the restaurant most nights – the food is impeccable, combining local dishes with a selection of classics from around the world, and an impressive wine list. The restaurant has breathtaking panoramic views of the sea and port, and is a really special place for a gourmet meal for two. However, if you prefer something a little more intimate, room service is ideal for a candlelit meal on your private balcony or patio.

During our holiday we took the shuttle bus to Sorrento – we could have walked there it but the hotel is located at the top of a hill and we didn’t fancy the trek back in the heat. The Chiesa di San Francesco is well worth a visit – its 14th century cloisters are breathtaking. We enjoyed a leisurely coffee in Piazza Tasso, found a wonderful pizzeria that served the most delicious pizza we’ve ever had, and finished off a perfect day with a limoncello in a local bar.

We also visited Pompeii, as it was a short drive from the hotel, and rented a car and drove down the coast to the picturesque town of Positano. We browsed the boutiques and enjoyed a lazy lunch near the beach, before returning to the hotel.

The beauty centre has a tantalising spa menu as well as facilities to help you energise or relax, depending on your specific needs. The sauna, Turkish bath and hydromassage hot tub will ease you into a state of calm. Among the pampering spa treatments on offer are toning and relaxing massages, shiatsu massage, reflexology and Ayurvedic head massages, and body peels. The thermal mud therapy is not to be missed – it’s a fantastic pore cleansing treatment that will leave your skin smooth and fresh. Manicures and pedicures will give you that finished feeling, and a tanning session will leave you with an all-over bronzed glow while protecting your skin from the sun.

I went for a full body aromatherapy massage – the therapist eased away the muscle tension I’d accumulated after a long day’s sightseeing.
