Contemporary design, exceptional cuisine, extensive facilities and glorious surroundings – the Monte Prado Hotel & Spa offered everything we needed for a relaxing and tranquil holiday. Breathtaking views of the Galiz and Gerez mountains can be enjoyed from the huge floor-to-ceiling windows. This is a supremely stylish and elegant hotel located in a stunning setting.

Guest rooms are minimalist, with modern furniture and lots of space. There is a restaurant hosting a number of themed buffet nights as well as an à la carte service – we enjoyed sampling Portuguese specialities and local wines. We had a couple of really lovely romantic meals, just enjoying being together.

Breakfasts are sumptuous buffets showcasing the finest local produce, and the best way to set us up for all the activity that was to come. We spent our days hiking in the nearby mountains, and hired a car so we could visit some picturesque villages. The rest of the time we spent sunbathing and swimming in the outdoor pool, and making the most of the superb facilities, including the gym and the first class spa. We left feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

The River Spa is inspired by the natural surroundings – especially the vineyards that the region is known for. The signature Alvarinho therapies use natural grapes in a range of treatments, including hydrotherapy massages, peels and facials. I booked a deliciously fruity grape therapy that included an exfoliating treatment, hydrotherapy massage and wrap, all using the curative qualities of the grape. After the treatment the lovely therapist gave me a chilled glass of Alvarinho wine, which I enjoyed in the relaxation area.

I was lucky enough to try the Mixed Chocolates Package – a day-long extravaganza comprising an indulgent dark chocolate massage, cocoa peeling treatment and wrap, and white chocolate cream massage. Luxurious and soothing, the whole experience left me glowing and totally relaxed. Afterwards we headed to the restaurant for a healthy meal, followed by the best night’s sleep I’d had in a long time – blissful!
