Wanting a weekend away from the UK without having to venture too far, my husband and I came across this modern hotel in the north of Germany and decided to give it a go.
We’d travelled around the country before we were married, but rather than returning to a familiar haunt we wanted to discover something new, and the Van der Valk Landhotel Spornitz looked like just the place.
Having taken many short breaks together, we know what we want out of a stay. With a limited amount of time at our disposal the top priorities are location, comfort and good quality basics – and this hotel offers all of this and more. Set on the edge of Lewitz, a protected nature reserve, this modern establishment, which opened in 1995, boasts stunning views of the surrounding countryside, and is beautifully decorated with modern furnishings.
Our room for the weekend was homely yet stylish in its decor; charming yet not overdone. The hotel itself was exactly what we needed and a good base from which to explore the surrounding area of Mecklenburg–West Pomerania.
With so much to see and do we had a lot to fit in during our three days and nights. Staff were very helpful in making sure we got the most out of our stay. We’d researched the area beforehand, but also wanted to take advantage of the stunning location.
Our favourite visit of the weekend was to the fairytale Schwerin Castle. Set on an island in Lake Schwerin, the inspiring building dates back to the last major palace conversion in the 19th century. With beautiful grounds and panoramic views across the lake, it was a truly magical experience.
Another must-see for Spornitz visitors is the nature reserve of Lewitz. We took a boat trip around the grounds and also tried out a spot of diving – with wildlife and historical areas to see it was a peaceful way to spend a day.
There is also plenty of shopping to be done in the city of Schwerin, with its pretty promenades and bustling shopping centre.
