A leisurely holiday was long overdue, so my girlfriend and I decided to check out a golf destination in northern Germany. The Van der Valk Golfhotel Serrahn is a rural idyll surrounded by crystal clear lakes, green meadows, wide fields and woods.

By the time we had pulled into the entrance we were already captivated. We quickly checked in and headed straight to our room to freshen up. The room was lovely – decorated in a timeless country-house style, and boasting everything we needed. We unpacked and went downstairs to explore our surroundings.

Both the elegant hotel restaurant (with its pretty winter garden) and the Valkenstübchen serve local specialities, as well as some delicious classics from around the world. The laid-back restaurant became our favourite place to relax every evening with a fine glass of cognac.

Non-golfers will enjoy the multitude of activities the region offers. You can take a Nordic walking tour, or explore the region on a hike. You can also rent bikes and spend a day discovering the beauty of the countryside and the traditional villages.

A swimming pool, sauna and jacuzzi can be found at the nearby sister resort  in Linstow, and there are massage therapies available – especially welcome after a day on the course.

If you’re an avid golfer like me, you will find Van der Valk Golfhotel Serrahn to your liking. It’s easy to just wake up, grab some breakfast and then head to the course for your reserved tee-time.

The hotel runs a beautifully groomed 18-hole golf course among other facilities. I decided to start the day at the driving range. The country air was invigorating, and there was plenty of room; I quickly found a nice spot close to the water. However, it was easy to get lost in the moment because of the idyllic scenery. Clear blue sky and an emerald green course make for excellent golfing conditions. I’m not the best golfer, but the hotel’s course offered me a little bit of everything, with enough bunkers and sand traps to give me a hard time. The holes were definitely fun to play – challenging but suitable for everyone.
