My wife and I spent a lovely long weekend with our two young children at the Van der Valk Resort Linstow over the summer. From the moment we arrived the hotel staff were fabulous. They recommended the best places to go, gave us advice on the tourist attractions, and offered plenty more in the way of local insider tips.

This is a grand hotel complex, designed in the style of a Mediterranean holiday resort, yet set in the northern heart of Germany. A great concept – and it works. With nearly 90 rooms and over 290 bungalows, the Van der Valk Resort Linstow is huge, with a massive list of activities to match.

A tropical swimming pool, complete with water slides and separate kids’ area, was lots of fun. Squash courts, tennis courts, table tennis and trampolines vied for our attention. You can rent mountain bikes, go fishing, play football or try horse-riding. And after all that activity, you can wind down in the sauna or jacuzzi, or book a pampering massage treatment in the spa. Perfect!

Children are well catered for too, with kids’ clubs, theatre shows, babysitting and an adventure playground. Kids can also sleep overnight in teepees during the summer – a magical experience. Ideally located just 90 minutes by car from Berlin, the Van der Valk Resort in Linstow is the perfect place to enjoy a long weekend. It was a pleasure for us to spend time in the gorgeous Mecklenburg Lake District, and visit some of Germany’s most famous places. You can soak up the atmosphere of a German town untainted by tourism, and use Linstow as a base for exploring the culture and rich history of the country.

We took the hotel’s organised day-trip to Berlin to explore the city; we spent a lovely day roaming around, taking pictures and doing general touristy things. We visited the remains of the Berlin wall and spent a few hours walking around the fascinating Jewish Museum, then took a fun driving tour in a Trabant car.

But we spent most of our time in the resort as there was so much to do. The tropical swimming pool had waterslides that kept our little ones amused for hours, and I had a wonderful massage in the wellness centre. We went horse-riding and rented bikes – a great way to explore the surrounding countryside. The kids were entertained in the daycare centre, giving us some much-needed time off.
