Berlin: so much to see, do and buy! A weekend is never going to be long enough to experience everything you want to in this frenetic city, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t grasp the opportunity when it presents itself. You can always come back (and believe me, you’ll want to).
Hecker's Hotel was the perfect choice for us. It was our first weekend in Berlin so we needed a hotel that was near the sights, and where staff would look after us at the end of the day (or more appropriately, when we rolled in after midnight, a little worse for wear).
Our room was spacious, luxurious and comfortable, with a separate dressing area, which was a blessing when we popped back for a brief outfit change on our way out for the night.
The breakfast at Hecker’s was a highlight – specifically the boiled eggs, which were done to perfection every time. The Roof Terrace, with its loungers and sun umbrellas, was a great place to chill with a drink and look out over the city skyline, and there is also a stylish Lobby Bar.
Hecker’s Cassambalis Taverna, where we ate on our first night, is a well-loved eaterie popular with guests and locals alike, and a meal here should definitely be on your to-do list. I had a large plate of delicious truffle pasta, while my companion enjoyed some wonderfully fresh fish. The waiters were friendly, attentive and helpful, and made sure we had everything we needed.
Shopping and more
Hecker’s is located just off the famous Kurfürstendamm boulevard, or Ku’damm as the locals call it. Designer boutiques, department stores, fashion chains and trendy stores abound.
Sightseeing includes the Kaiser Wilhelm church, a stark and harrowing reminder of the horrors of war. Bombed during World War II, only the ruined spire still stands. Next to the spire is the modern Memorial Church and Tower which hosts regular concerts. Also, within walking distance of the hotel is the famous Berlin Zoo. It’s a popular attraction with plenty of animals including hippos, lions and pandas.
Other must-see attractions include the Reichstag, Tiergarten (in summer), Holocaust Memorial and the Schloss Charlottenburg, all within easy reach via the city’s metro network.
After a day’s sightseeing it’s easy to give in to tiredness, but in Berlin that would be a big mistake! The city comes alive after dark, with theatre, cabaret, bars, beer halls and all-night clubbing to choose from. After all, you can always sleep when you get home!
