Murano Glass - a Venetian speciality
by
Kate Elliot
Venice is arguably one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Steeped in history, its stunning palaces, canals and culture combine to create a diverse city with everlasting beauty. Home to St Marks Square, monumental architecture and Murano glass, this city is truly a magnificent treat. Incredibly romantic and a top spot for honeymooners, as a compulsory vision this city never ceases to amaze.
Venice is home to many cultural treats, and one of the crafts that it is most famous for is Murano glass. Developed during the 13th century and originating from the island of Murano, it is renowned for being a colourful and skilful art form. The process is made using a lamp working technique. The glass is made from silica which becomes liquid at high temperatures, and as the glass transforms from a liquid to a solid state, there is a period of time when the glass is soft before it hardens completely. It is only at this certain temperature that the glass master can sculpt it into any shape or form.
The colours and techniques differ depending on the style of glass the master is attempting to create. Colours are achieved by using ingredients such as copper compound for aquamarine and a gold solution for ruby red.
There are numerous places in Venice where you can purchase Murano glass and with an endless amount of impressive designs available, the hardest decision will be what to buy first.
While visiting the city, we recommend experiencing the procedure of Murano glass making - to truly appreciate the wonder of this Venetian spectacle.
