For those who want to get off the well-travelled path, a back-roads mountain tour is just the ticket.  A few companies offer excursions that depart from Denver and travel to remote areas with spectacular scenery, with both half and full day trips available.
These trips go to ghost towns, old mining camps, historic wagon trails and other historic sites with the option of four-wheel drive tours, bicycling tours or water excursions along the Platte River ideal for rafts, kayaks and canoes.
Denver’s proximity to the Rocky Mountains makes it possible to spend a day skiing, snowmobiling, horseback riding, river running, sailing, fishing, hunting, mountain climbing or rock-hounding and still be able to return to the luxurious accommodation of the Hotel Monaco at nightfall.

About the hotel

This colourful, elegant and completely renovated boutique hotel was once the 1917 Railway Exchange building and the 1937 Art Moderne Title building, but has been reborn into Denver’s hippest high-style luxury hotel.  Playful décor lavished in an almost incredible attention to detail abounds, with eye-catching interiors inspired equally by Art Deco and French design.
The main lobby, site of complimentary morning coffee and evening “altitude adjustment” wine receptions, immediately sets the tone of fantasy, with its multi-tiered 23-foot high ceiling displaying intricate geometric designs in a kaleidoscope of jewel tones.  A ten-foot chandelier lights the ceiling as well as the lacquer-red striped walls set with bookcases and art around a glowing fireplace and comfy upholstered furniture.
All 189 guestrooms, including 32 suites, continue the fantasy, meanwhile Panzano the hotel’s restaurant, whisks guests to the Italian countryside with contemporary northern Italian entrees as well as featuring an exhibition bakery.
The Hotel Monaco treats visitors to a grand sense of escape in the Mile-High City and despite its long ago, faraway feel, places guests squarely in the heart of present-day Denver’s central business district.

Hotel facilities

The Hotel Monaco rivals the magic of its food and design with a number of exceptional services.  The hotel’s mascot, a Jack Russell terrier named Lily Sopris, greets and entertains guests in the lobby and the management welcomes pets travelling with their owners.  For those travellers missing their pets, the exceptional service of the management extends to providing guests with a companion goldfish on request.
Each evening, guests can enjoy a complimentary wine reception in the hotel lobby to set the mood and relax after a busy day of business or sightseeing, before enjoying the full service Northern Italian restaurant, which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as 24-hour room service.  Other dining options are also available at the charming Brunswick Bar.
A complimentary 24-hour on-site fitness room features Stairmasters, stationary bikes and treadmills and for those wanting a fuller workout session, discounted passes are available for those wishing to utilise the nearby exercise facility at the Athletic Centre.
A full-service Renaissance Aveda Spa and Salon offers a wide variety of body treatments – everything from manicure and pedicure to a Total Body Elixer Treatment.  Just like the rest of the Hotel Monaco, the pampering transports guests to a kinder, gentler – and more sensual – time and place.

Things to do

The stunning skyline against the backdrop of the Rockies will take your breath away.  This cultural hub attracts business travellers and tourists alike and the boutique Hotel Monaco is just one block from the mile-long 16th Street Pedestrian Mall, LoDo (lower downtown) and Larimer Square, a lively area filled with art galleries, shops, cafes, restaurants and brew pubs.
Shoppers will love the wealth of stores and boutiques, especially in Larimer Square and for art lovers, the galleries offer a colourful array of activities.  History buffs will enjoy a tour through Denver’s US Mint or head towards the State Capitol, just across Broadway.
After enjoying a city tour head slightly further a field and explore more of Denver by venturing west into the old Rocky Mountain foothill mining towns of Idaho Springs and Georgetown.  Stop off on the way in Golden to visit Coors Brewery or visit Buffalo Bill’s grave on Lookout Mountain.
Alternatively take the cog railway to Pike’s Peak, which climbs the mountain in a 3.5-hour trip, up to an elevation of 14,110 feet.  At the summit, view the whole of Denver and the Sangre De Cristo Mountains.
