Istanbul is the only city in the world to bridge two continents, and the Agia Sofia mosque is representative of how Turkey’s Asian and European heritage has moulded the city. Built in the 6th Century, it served the city as a Christian Byzantine church for 900 years. The Ottomans took over what was then Constantinople in 1453, and converted the Agia Sofia into a Muslim mosque, painting over the icons and erecting four minarets. In 1934 it became a museum, and should be on every itinerary to Istanbul.
The Grand Bazaar is a series of covered streets full of shops selling material, jewellery, handicrafts, spices, carpets and trinkets – great for exotic bargains.
Groups can take trips down the Bosphorus waterway that separates the Asian and European sides of the city. An island tour day trip is also recommended, taking in the nearby Princes’ Islands.
