• Agia Sofia mosque - a representative of how Turkey’s Asian and European heritage has moulded the city. Built in the 6th Century, it served the city as a Christian Byzantine church for 900 years. The Ottomans took over what was then Constantinople in 1453, and converted the Agia Sofia into a Muslim mosque, painting over the icons and erecting four minarets. In 1934 it became a museum, and should be on every itinerary to Istanbul.
