The vibrant history of Chania – in many ways Crete’s spiritual capital – is evident throughout. Venetian castles, Roman baths, Byzantine churches, Turkish minarets and Phoenician and Saracen ruins make up this attractive city. It clusters around the harbour and most tourists confine themselves to this area or the fringes of the new town up towards the bus station.
Samaria National Park should be on every visitor’s list. The majestic Samaria Gorge is a must-see, and you may even be lucky enough to spot the island’s famous kri-kri goats.
