Dining

Perhaps the element that the chefs at Van der Valk Landhotel Spornitz pride themselves on most highly is the freshness of the produce used at both of the wonderful restaurants. For instance the fish are always sourced from the local waters and the game meat on the menu comes from the surrounding forests, ensuring you will always know where your food comes from.

  • Food is served nearly all day at the hotel, so you will never want for anything.
  • Breakfast begins at 6.30am, for all the early risers, and continues until 10.30am
  • The á la carte restaurant is open for 12 hours, from 11am to 11pm
  • There are a large variety of vegetarian and fish dishes, as well as local and international cuisine.

If you wish to try some simpler, perhaps more rustic fare, then the Kartoffelstube is ideal. With a cosier ambience, this restaurant offers more seasonal dishes and allows you to try traditional German dishes like schnitzel!

Adjoining the restaurant is the hotel bar where you can finish the day with a cocktail in a relaxed and warm environment.

    Things to do

The spa area of Plau am See, originally a Slavic settlement called “Plawe“, is the ideal starting point for holiday-makers. With its range of water activities in the beautiful medieval fishing and rafters' town, Lake Plau is a wonderful place to take an excursion. Two passenger ships provide a link to the large lakes as well as the cities of Malchow, Waren and Röbel.

You can also enjoy the unique water landscape on a boat, canoe or sailing trip. Along the Müritz-Elde waterways, you can admire a lock system with chicken ladder, the water tower and the lift bridge dating back to 1916. The medieval castle tower and half-timbered houses create an extra attraction for the town of Plau. Along the promenade, guests can enjoy traditional cafes in a relaxed atmosphere. The nature and landscape protection areas around Plau are the ideal place for walking and cycling tours. For sport lovers wanting a little more exhilaration, check out the Alpincenter Bottrop indoor ski hall, the largest indoor ski run in the world.

Lake Schwerin is certainly a highlight of the area, with fantastic opportunities for both divers and water sports enthusiasts to explore the stunning waterscapes. Fish, crabs, sunken fishing boats and underwater groves can be discovered at depths between 2 to 10 metres all year round. To discover more of the surrounding countryside, the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Hunting Ground is well worth a visit. Here you can expect to see some breathtaking experiences of nature, including white-tailed eagles, osprey, Lesser Spotted eagles, otters, beavers, pine martens, cranes and storks.

Schwerin, the region’s capital has developed in recent years to become a nationally renowned shopping centre. For the really special shopping experience, Schwerin offers a host of options. Or discover the multifaceted Hanseatic city of Hamburg with its museums, boat trips and the world famous Reeperbahn. Experience Berlin, only 150 km away with the world famous Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, numerous museums and a whole lot more that makes this city so unique.

The Schwerin Castle, romantically situated on an island in Lake Schwerin, is amongst one of the most important buildings in European history. It inherited the design it has today from the last major palace conversion in the 19th Century, which included four houses from the 15th and 17th Century. The palace museum is housed in three floors of these old lake side buildings.
