The Capital is a vital piece of London’s hotel history and culture. Created and built by owner David Levin 40 years ago, it became London’s first boutique hotel making it a perfect destination for those seeking romance and culture.
David Levin, who still runs the hotel today, always had revolutionary ideas, often unheard of. When he started to create The Capital in 1969 most hotels were built with 400 rooms plus to accommodate growing tourism. The hotel opened in 1971, as the only London hotel combining accommodation with a fine dining restaurant and employed an English chef – Richard Shepherd.
In 1974 Michelin published its first ever guide in England, and only four hotel restaurants were awarded stars - The Capital Hotel and Restaurant received its first Michelin Star. In 2003 The Capital Hotel Restaurant received the distinction of two Michelin stars, which it continues to enjoy, and remains the only hotel restaurant dining room in London, operating full service, seven days a week, with this accolade.
Many well known chefs launched their careers at The Capital and were mentored by David Levin: Richard Shepherd, Brian Turner, Paul Merrett and Gary Rhodes, for which David Levin opened the Greenhouse restaurant in Mayfair in 1977, which also was also awarded a Michelin star.
Set within fashionable Knightsbridge, it is only a stone’s throw away from Harrods and the exclusive shopping mile of Sloane Street. But there is more than fashion that can be enjoyed nearby. Hyde Park, the South Kensington Museums, the Royal Albert Hall and even Buckingham Palace are only a short walk away.
Romance at the Capital takes many shapes and forms: from enjoying the hotel's unique gastronomic and cultural offerings to riverside strolls, horse riding or simply enjoying central's London countless offerings together. You can also opt to simply stay in your room of course, and the hotel can accommodate most wishes to ensure an unforgettable experience.
