Things to do

In the past two to three years, Funchal, along with the rest of the island, has benefited from major renovation, which has included the restoration of many historic buildings along with the opening of fine restaurants, street cafés and lively bars. Funchal’s horse-shoe-shaped harbour invites a visit especially to the eastern point where visitors will pass an old fortress and the Mercado dos Lavradores market. Away from the crowds there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy a quiet stroll, including on the famous Levadas, which is only a short drive from the Savoy Resort. Outdoor cocktail parties and dinners can be staged on the terrace, with its views over Funchal and the Atlantic. Entertainment options include a traditional Madeiran night, with brass band and folk dancing; a classical evening in the Bellevue Room and sports tournaments (including mini-golf, shuffleboard and petonque).
