The Landmark London occupies a rare position in the history of London hotels. Originally opened in 1899 as The Great Central Hotel, it was the last of the great Victorian railway hotels constructed during the golden age of steam.
With the advent of the car and replacement of rail as the dominant mode of transport in the early 20th century, it was only forty years before what was arguably the most luxurious of all the great Victorian railway terminus hotels had to close its doors. For the next forty years the building was used for a variety of functions including a convalescent home during the Second World War, a military office building as well as the headquarters of the British Railways Board.
In a pattern that was followed by several of the railway hotels it later returned to its original use and was purchased in 1995 by the Lancaster Landmark Group who later renamed it The Landmark London.
The hotel's central location makes it the ideal place from which to discover London's many cultural and historical attractions. So after soaking up the city's culture you can return to a hotel full of its own history.
The Landmark London, built in 1899 during the golden age of steam, is a unique combination of Victorian grandeur and 21st Century technology. The hotel still retains the resplendence of gothic architecture: stained glass windows, beautiful wall murals and original working fireplaces. Awarded ‘Best Hotel in London’ three times in the last six years, The Landmark’s award-winning service, spacious guest rooms and facilities make it the top destination in the capital.
