Special City

Lucerne’s many attractions include the Chapel Bridge. Built during the 14th Century, the bridge was named after nearby St Peter’s Chapel, and is covered in paintings depicting scenes of local history. The bridge also tells the story of Lucerne’s patron saints, St Leodegar and St Maurice.
Another must-see is the Jesuit Church. Constructed in the 17th Century, the church houses the original clothes of Brother Klaus, a famous Swiss patron.
The Musegg Wall is part of the city walls dating from 1386, with three towers along its section. These are open to the public and house interesting artifacts, including the city clock which dates from 1535.
The Weinmarkt, Hirschenplatz and Kornmarkt squares all boast fine examples of medieval architecture.

An inn has stood at the present site of the Hotel des Balances since 1200. Its location near to the town’s busy fish and wine market (Weinmarkt Square) made it a popular spot for high society to meet. Over the years the hotel has played an important role in Lucerne’s history.
Many illustrious guests have stayed at the Hotel des Balances, as it hasa been known since 1807. Among them are writer George Bernard Shaw and members of European nobility, who were attracted by the exceptional service and gourmet cuisine.
Today the hotel enjoys the reputation of an exclusive hotel in one of the best locations right in the heart of Lucerne. And the medieval murals that adorn the facade of the hotel have made it one of the most photographed attractions in Lucerne.
